 Cherokee Heart
 Debby Sorensen Carlson

Upon his wrists new ink
forms a band of letters
written in Cherokee.
One wrist for each sister
honoring them and his love
for his heritage.

This Man child carries
a name that speaks Irish,
but inside, the blood flows
to the rivers and deep woods
of the Cherokee nation.

His essence cries freedom.
His face, smooth and yet unlined,
seeks out to wander untethered,
waiting for his own adventures
to find their place
in his heart.
